Main achievements in 2021
- The SMJ-Team (co-)authored four papers.
- “Against all odds – two exceptional survived injuries” (Rechtsmedizin)
- “Rare (uro-)genital pathologies in young girls mimicking sexual abuse” (International Journal of Legal Medicine)
- “Age Estimation with the Greulich-Pyle Atlas using 3T MR Images of Hand and Wrist” (Forensic Science International)
- “Two cases of fatal inhalation of easily available “recreational” substances” (American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology)
- An international reference book has been published by Thieme on “Radiology of Violence”, to which Martine Schaul and Thorsten Schwark have contributed three chapters. The 500-page long book will certainly become a must-have in the library of all forensic scientists.
Main achievements in 2021
- 01/09/2021: 10th anniversary of the forensic genetics unit.
- Organization of the annual meeting of the French speaking working group of the International Society for Forensic Genetics (ISFG-gf) under “covid-conditions”.
- Oral presentation by Emilie Simon at the annual meeting of the ISFG-gf with the title: “Case report – When “WHO?” becomes “HOW?”, Interpretation at the activity level”.
- Oral presentation by Moïse Menevret at the annual meeting of the ISFG-gf with the title: “The three lives of Aladin – impact of chimeras on interpretation of results”.
- Oral presentation by Cyrielle Nicolaizeau and Samuel Stouvenaker at the annual meeting of the European Forensic DNA working group with the title: “Hands-free from stain to DNA”.
- Eight young students showed great interest in forensic genetics and were hosted by the team for trainings in the laboratory.
Main achievements in 2021
- Oral presentation by Michel Yegles at the annual meeting of the Society of hair Testing in Santiago de Compostelle with the title: “Impact after thermal straightening on opiate and methadone concentrations in hair”.
- The Toxicological Society of Belgium and Luxembourg (BLT) held their annual scientific meeting in Echternach. In his capacity as vice-president of the society, Michel Yegles, in charge of our forensic toxicology service in the Department of Forensic Medicine, took charge of the organisation of this meeting.
- Oral presentation by Stefania Oliverio at the annual meeting of the BLT with the title: “The Silent Killer” – Total Blood Carbon Monoxide (TBCO as alternative biomarker for CO poisoning diagnosis: application in clinical and forensic settings).
- Oral presentation by Stefania Oliverio at the meeting “Europäisches Expertentreffen Drogenerkennung/Suchtprävention” in St. Ingbert (Saarland) with the title: «Arzneimittelmissbrauch auf großherzoglichen Straßen».
- Guest lecture by Stefania Oliverio at the Doctoral Programme in Biomedical Sciences – Legal Medicine of the University of Geneva (Switzerland) with the title: Alcohol, drugs & medicines: the toxicologist’s trifecta.
- Engineering Trainee Days (ETD): the forensic toxicology unit of our forensic medicine department had the pleasure of hosting 2 young high school girls, a joint initiative of the Association Luxembourgeoise des Ingénieurs, Architectes, Scientifiques, Industriels (da Vinci) and Jonk Entrepreneuren Luxembourg (JEL), with the support of the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth.
Main achievements in 2021
- The Technical Platform for Analytical Toxicology and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, together with the Abrigado (the drug consumption room in Luxembourg City) investigated the chemical reactions taking place when heating heroin without the use of water prior to injection, commonly known as the “Turkish Method”.
- The service Technical platform authored or co-authored 4 papers :
- with the colleagues from the food surveillance units, results on quality assessment of cannabidiol-rich cannabis extracts purchased on the internet.
- with colleagues from SMJ unit investigation of a fatal inhalation of toxic substances.
- a statistical evaluation of drug quality in Luxembourg over the past years.
- investigation of a novel preparation of heroin before iv injection (Turkish preparation method).
- Serge Schneider, Claude Marson and Adèle Bournaud were invited to University of Strasbourg to teach Drug analysis, Chemical threat analysis and Medicines control.
- International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking – closer look at our analytical toxicology and pharmaceutical chemistry platform in the Department of Forensic Medicine, whose main task is the identification of addictive substances and their dosage with Dr sc. Serge Schneider.
- Participation of Dr Serge Schneider at the “Drug Analysis Group” of the German society for forensic toxicology.
- Specialists form University of Antwerpen and Luxembourg Police visit the Analytical Toxicology-pharmaceutical chemistry service for testing a new device to detect illegal drugs in street samples.
